Thats a great photo! I loved his books when I was young – and later also enjoyed the TV version of his stories. Is he still alive? [I could google and find out – but …]
No, he died on 23 February 1995, in Thirlby, United Kingdom.
Interesting story here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1314863/James-Herriots-private-hell-The-shocking-truth-man-TVs-famous-vet.html
They say it [finally] in the second to last paragraph ‘sensitive’. Of course he was! A good therapist could have helped him work past those parental issues, but they offered shock therapy instead …… sorry its a high-horse I ride on this subject. It seems so often to be the case that those who leave us with wonderful stories have suffered their own private hells…
Psychiatrists have a lot to answer for.
I love his books.
I have read ‘All Things Great and Small’ and loved it.
So sad the acts of the parents, of disapproving that create a life filled with seeds of emotionally traumatic pain. Too many children have been afflicted with this unloving care and yet who opens the eyes of those to see and change their ways? And, yet, in the children the genius and goodness still comes through. Thanks for honoring him, Ela.
True. “It’s not what we don’t know that hurts. It’s what we know that ain’t so.”
― Will Rogers
The pain of understanding that quote goes deep. Good one, Ela.
I knew you would understand; thanks Paw!
I guess our mother forgot to tell us we’s twins, BOL. 😉
