The first seven families have now been sent to Nauru under the Government’s new “hardline” asylum seeker policy. It won’t be long before unaccompanied children are also sent to Nauru and Manus Island, according to Immigration Minister Tony Burke.

These past few weeks have seen the debate around asylum seeker policy reach a level of ridiculousness never before seen.

Let’s take a recap of the policies announced just in the last month alone, shall we?

On 19 July, Labor announces their “PNG solution”, under which no refugee who arrives by boat will ever be settled in Australia. The Coalition returned fire by announcing their plan to use a “three star general” to turn back the boats under “Operation Sovereign Borders”. They then capped it off with by pledging to construct a “tent city” on Nauru.

Labor followed up by announcing that they too will send asylum seekers to Nauru and permanently resettle them there. The Coalition then turned their focus to punishing refugees who are already in Australia and announced their “fast track” policy.

The latest policy from the Coalition seeks to reintroduce Temporary Protection Visas in a bid to “clear the backlog” of 32,000 people currently waiting to hear the outcome of their refugee claims. Should any of their claims be denied, the Coalition plans to remove their right to appeal the decision – a decision that can be the difference between life or death, when someone is forcibly sent back to a country where they face persecution.

Share the video with your friends and family to highlight just how preposterous these latest policies are.

To help make sure issues, like a fairer treatment of asylum seekers, are in voters’ minds this election, GetUp members will be handing out over two million independent scorecards on election day to show where the parties stand.

  1. This is a send-up of the shameless way refugees are being treated.

  2. Reblogged this on Amanda's Words / starfire8me and commented:
They should deport illegals out of N. America like that! OR JUST BE LIKE RUSSIA: NO PAPERS??

  3. Our refugees are treated way better than the homeless.

  4. The world has so much greed and evil and they usually go hand in hand. It is a sad state of affairs. Thank goodness for those like you who are always there to shed light on the atrocities committed against others. You are a beacon of hope! πŸ™‚

  5. OH my one of those that I was referring to. Probably both evil and greedy. What is wrong with people? Can they not see how easily life could have dealt them a similar fate, and what would they say then? The more people like this I meet, the more I love my dogs!! πŸ™‚
