Dear Minister Brendan O’Connor and Mr. Scott Morrison,
No child seeking Australia’s protection should be detained on Manus Island – or anywhere else.
The Australian Government is responsible for the welfare of the 34 detained children on Manus Island and is failing each and every one of them.
We urge this Government and the Opposition to commit to move children and their families from Manus Island into community detention on the Australian mainland as soon as possible to have their refugee claims promptly assessed.
No human being should be arbitrarily and indefinitely detained in remote offshore places as a punishment for simply seeking asylum. Alternatives, such as community models in Australia, do work and should be expanded.
This election year we call for an end to offshore processing and for a new era of fair, humane and sustainable asylum policies – something all Australians can be proud of.
